    Topographic Map Layers

Each Topographic map layer is laser cut at our production facility in Warkworth, North Auckland. The laser cutting and engraving process achieves a far superior finish and level of detailing than CNC or hand cutting.

Each layer is cut from a premium quality 4-5mm thick Gaboon hardwood plywood sheet and then precisely bonded to the layer below with industrial grade glues and high pressure clamping systems.

For more detailed information on this process see the "Engraving & Layers Information" tab below.

    Professionally Framed in NZ

We don't specialise in manufacturing premium quality frames so we've handed this step to the professionals, when investing in a piece of art like this you want it to look its best and the framing is a key aspect in achieving a luxurious and eye-catching finish.

Your Topographic map is professionally framed by New Zealand's largest frame manufacturers who have worked closely with us to create a custom frame that helps to showcase your wall art and protect it from dust and UV fading.

Each frame is individually handmade and comes with internal spacers to securely hold all layers in place and distribute their weight evenly around the frame. Your frame is finished with an acid free mat framing border and crystal clear glass or UV perspex cover to add the extra WOW factor and help protect your masterpiece.

    Wood Layer Information

Each layer in your Topographical map is laser cut from a 4-5mm thick Gaboon / Okoume hardwood plywood sheet. The ply board construction makes each individual layer very stable and strong and eliminates any risk of warping or expansion that can occur due to environmental conditions.

Each layer has a beautiful Gaboon hardwood finish which has a consistent grain pattern and engraves perfectly without any burn or smoke makings left behind unlike over materials suck as Bamboo & pine wood. Trust us, we tested over twenty different wood materials to find the perfect species and grain pattern that not only looks amazing but will stand the test of time.

    Water Depth Colours

After weeks of development and countless test pots, we have created a range of different shades of ocean blue which are applied to each water layer on your Topographic map to enhance the 3D aspect and ocean topography of your finished art piece. The deeper the water, the darker the shade of blue. Each wood layer is applied with a thin water based coat of paint which allows you to still see all the beautiful characteristic of the Gaboon hardwood and the grain pattern running horizontally across the map mimicking the waves on the water.

    Topographic Map Engraving

The engraved details on your Topographic map including water depths, roads, town names etc. are laser engraved resulting in a very clean and crisp detailed finish which is far superior to CNC and hand engraving methods.

The engraving on each water layer is carried out after the layer is painted and the engraving process removes the paint to show the wood grain and wood colour below. The top layer of your Topographic map which has no paint or coatings applied is lightly engraved, resulting in a darker colour finish that contrasts beautifully again the natural Gaboon wood colouring.

    Layer Fixing & Glueing

Each layer on our Topographic maps are bonded together with industrial strength wood glues and clamped at high pressure ensuring that your map will not warp, split or move over time.

We have development our own custom designed clamping table that allows us to precisely align each layer down to a fraction of a millimetre and then securely clamp each layer to ensure a flat and even glue application and bonding so you'll never see any gaps, warping or misaligned water & land layers.

Why Choose Ahurei Gifts for Your Topographic Maps

Below you will find the key benefits for choosing Ahurei Gifts for your Topographic maps:

    Made in New Zealand:
Each Topographic map is hand made, by us, in our Warkworth production facility in North Auckland. All materials, frames, designs are made in New Zealand.

    Professionally Made Frames:
Our Topographic maps are professionally framed by New Zealand's largest frame manufactures using solid pine wood and custom designed frame spacers for the map layers to sit on and distribute the weight evenly around the frame. Each frame has an acid free mat boarder and glass or UV perspex to stop any dust or damage to the layers, allowing your map to look as amazing as it does on day one for many years to come.

    Water Depth Colour Variations:
We have developed a range of ocean blue colour depth variations which are applied to each individual layer, resulting in a darker shade of blue for each depth of water.

    Hardwood Plywood:
We use a Gaboon hard wood plywood construction which has superior strength, will not warp or expand due to environmental factors and engraves beautifully with no burn or smoke marks unlike other wood materials such as Bamboo or Pine wood.

    Wood Grain Direction & Defects:
The wood grain on our maps runs horizontally across the wood as this looks much better when using the wood as layers for land and especially for oceans and bodies of waters as this mimics waves. We also ensure that we DO NOT use any part of the wood sheets that contain any defects, including uneven wood grain patterns or large and dark knot areas.

    Layer Construction:
We have developed a custom-made clamping table that allows us to align each layer within a fraction of a millimetre and clamp each layer evenly at high pressure to ensure a uniformed and level glue distribution and bonding. Applying high pressure evenly across each layer and using industrial strength glues ensures your map will stay looking like new for many years to come and will not split or warp over time.

Custom Additions & Points of Interest:
We can engrave additional points of interest on your Topographic map including house locations, fishing spots, sporting venues and more. We can also change the main engraved tiles, description and any other text on your map and create custom areas or locations from anywhere around the world.

    Sustainability:
We use sustainably sourced wood sheets, eco-friendly water based paints and all off cuts are used for other projects as and when usable.

    Auckland Showroom:
We have a showroom in Warkworth, North Auckland where you can get hands on with some of our amazing Topographic maps and see a range of finish map designs and frame size options.
